I saw a quote by Lady Bird Johnson today on the Positive Parenting Solutions facebook page. It stated, “Children are apt to live up to what you believe of them.” It got me thinking about our boys and who they really are. I am grateful for the Plan of Salvation and how it makes it so apparent just who these kids are. As Elder Nelson has stated, “We are Children of God. Our potential is unlimited.”
Back in March 2011, I wrote the following to LJ in his journal.
I bought a book the other day called “Bedtime and Naptime” by Hilary Weeks. I think I’ve mentioned every part of that book to your dad within the few short days I’ve had it. There was one particular thought that stuck with me. It came from this quote, “Once in a while, before I retire to bed, I quietly slip into my daughters’ rooms, where they are fast asleep. I tuck their hair behind their ears, lean over, and softly whisper…I believe in you.” Well, I don’t dare sneak into your room while you are asleep for fear of waking you but I do believe in you. Since reading that, I’ve said that to you a few times during our little quiet moments together. However, I figure you may not remember, so I thought I would put it here as well. I do believe in you, my wonderful son(s). I believe you can (and will) do great things in your life. I believe you will be a force for good in the world and will be a positive influence as you move through this life. The other day, you gripped your little hand around my thumb and I started to think about your hands. What will your hands do during this life? How will you use them? They will certainly bless the lives of others. They will make covenants and promises. They will help and heal and teach. I love to think of your potential and, more importantly, the Lord’s divine and eternal potential for you. He loves you even more than I do and has even a better view of where all you will go and what all you will do during your time here.
I know that I am lucky to have these two amazing little boys in my life and I am grateful for all the potential for good that I see in them.
